Your First Visit at The Laser Dental Group

Welcome to The Laser Dental Group! We are thrilled that you have chosen us for your dental care needs. Our goal is to create a comfortable and welcoming environment where you can feel confident in the high-quality care you receive.

What to Expect During Your First Visit

  • Preparing for Your Appointment

When you arrive, we will ask you to complete important insurance and health information forms. These forms are designed to help us understand your dental and medical history so we can provide the best care tailored to your needs. They will also serve as an introduction to our practice and what we have to offer.

To make your visit as smooth as possible, we encourage you to arrive a few minutes early to complete the necessary paperwork.

  • Your Initial Exam

Your first appointment will last approximately one hour and is designed to help us get to know you and your dental goals. During this visit, you can expect:

    • Comprehensive Examination: A thorough assessment of your teeth, gums, and jaw.
    • X-Rays: Detailed images will be taken to evaluate the structure of your jaw, the positioning of your teeth, and to detect any signs of decay or other issues.
    • Oral Hygiene Guidance: Personalized instructions and tips to help you care for your teeth and gums at home.
    • Professional Cleaning (in most cases): We will gently remove plaque and tartar buildup, leaving your teeth feeling fresh and clean.
    • Treatment Plan Evaluation: After the examination, your dentist will provide an evaluation outlining any existing dental concerns and proposed treatment options.

Open Communication and Personalized Care

We believe that excellent dental care begins with clear and open communication. During your visit, we will:

  • Discuss any symptoms or issues that may require further treatment.
  • Explain our findings, diagnosis, and recommendations.
  • Present alternative treatment options, if available, to ensure you are comfortable with your care plan.

Our team is here to listen to your concerns and answer any questions you may have. Together, we will create a personalized treatment plan to help you achieve and maintain a healthy, beautiful smile.

Post-Op Instructions Following Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is an essential treatment for improving gum health and combating periodontal disease. After your procedure, you can expect to notice reduced redness, swelling, and bleeding in your gums. Your mouth will feel fresher, and your gums will look and feel healthier. Maintaining these results requires diligent home care and regular professional cleanings.

To help ensure a smooth recovery, please review the following post-treatment instructions:

What to Expect:

  • Discomfort:

Mild discomfort or slight throbbing is normal and should subside within a few hours. If needed, take a non-aspirin analgesic, such as Advil or Tylenol, as directed.

  • Tooth Sensitivity:

Sensitivity to temperature changes or sweets may occur for the first few days after treatment. This sensitivity usually diminishes quickly. If it persists, we may recommend a desensitizing fluoride treatment.

  • Bleeding:

Slight bleeding may occur during the first few brushings post-treatment but should decrease after a few days.

  • Appearance:

As your gums heal, they may change shape around your teeth, becoming tighter. This is a normal part of the healing process.

Instructions to Minimize Symptoms

  • Diet and Eating:

    • If extensive root planing was performed, chewing hard foods like meat or raw vegetables may cause discomfort for a few days. Stick to a soft diet until chewing feels normal again.
    • Avoid eating or chewing while the effects of any local anesthetic are present to prevent injury to your tongue or cheeks.
  • Discomfort and Sensitivity:

    • Take acetaminophen or a non-aspirin analgesic as recommended to alleviate discomfort.
    • If sensitivity to temperature persists, consider using a desensitizing toothpaste or fluoride treatment to reduce discomfort.
  • Oral Hygiene:

    • Gently brush your teeth while being mindful of tender areas. This may take longer than usual but is essential for healing.
    • Avoid flossing or using tools like the Rota-dent on the treated side for the first three days. Normal oral hygiene routines can resume by the third or fourth day.
    • Use an antimicrobial rinse or a warm salt-water rinse to reduce inflammation and aid healing. Limit the use of rinses to one or two consecutive weeks.
  • Special Instructions:

    • If symptoms such as pain, swelling, or sensitivity are severe or persist beyond the expected healing period, contact our office immediately.
